Into Thin Air
A first-hand account of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster - an absorbing read not just because of the tragic subject, but because it’s a truly gripping mix of mountaineering, medicine/physiology, psychology (including unreliable memories) and the very real consequences of cultural differences. Krakauer is a great writer in my opinion - I really enjoyed his prose and how he, at one hand, presented the facts as best as he could, but on the other hand, acknowledged his shortcomings nad that he might have played a part in the deaths of some of those who died there.
