The Remains of the Day
A gripping story of an English butler and a housekeeper, both serving a somewhat misguided Lord during the first half of the twentieth century.
Dignity, greatness, democracy, loyalty and professionalism are all themes of this relatively short book, so it gives a lot of food for thought.
Amongst many others, this passage resonated with me as it reminded me of my hiking trip accross the countryside of Great Britain:
I would venture that the landscape of our country alone would justify the use of this lofty adjective. […] I would say that it is the very lack of obvious drama or spectacle that sets the beauty of our land apart. What is pertinent is the calmness of this beauty, its sense of restraint. It is as though the land knows of its own beauty, of its own greatness, and feels no need to shout it.
