The Buried Giant
The first half of this book had this enigmatic atmosphere.
With the eerie feeling of a strange world, something like a fictional version of a gloomy, post-Arthurian England during the Middle Ages.
Monstrous orgre-like creatures lurking around the shabby settlements of human villages add to the mythical aspect of the world.
In the village, there was a communal sense of brain fog, and forgetfulness about people’s past, like they were losing memories at an accelerating pace.
The side characters were dark and frightening, you could never know if what they said was true, or if it was said with good intentions, or just lies and deception.
The second half of the book was a bit drawn-out, with fewer characters and a sense of heaviness that led me to not enjoy it as much.
The ending leaves room for interpretation. I would recommend this book.
