Helping Verbs of the Heart

Péter Esterházy ★★★★★

A short novel by an extremely influential and recently deceased Hungarian author.

When the mother of the protagonist dies, he and his siblings are reunited in the hospital and, later, at the funeral. Seeing them again induces a dream-like recollection of memory fragments and long forgotten details. Sometimes grotesque, sometimes hyper-realistic, but always playing with, and supremely conscious of, his language and words, the author is righfully called a classic. Beautiful expressions and abhorrent images of bodily functions greet you on each page.

Insane and chaotic, just as we all are.
